Harold Camping has four days left on earth before the May 21st doomsday arrives. So what is he doing with his time? Well, he's been running around taking care of business, as usual.

According to sources, he is absolutely positive the world will end at 6pm on May 21st. He said, "God has given sooo much information in the Bible about this, and so many proofs, and so many signs, that we know it is absolutely going to happen without any question at all."

Skeptics wonder what the real point of it all is. Sure, he is telling people the world's going to end soon. Does Camping truly believe what he says? It's hard to believe that someone who as well-schooled as he is in the Bible could actually think he knows when the world is ending, and the evidence of that is the fact that he isn't going to donate any of the money he's earned from his followers.

New York Magazine interviewed Camping and one of the questions was if he intended to donate his money to charity. Of course, he said he wouldn't be donating a cent. He explained his reasoning:

What's the point? In other words, Judgment Day is the end of the world. That means that the whole world is in judgment, it will not be business as usual at all. At all. Nothing that goes on is important any longer, either if you're a true believer and you're caught up to be with Christ, of which there are many people that this will happen to, but on the other hand, there will be almost 7 billion people who will be in a tremendous, terrible situation undoubtedly.

So, there you have it. Harold Camping is fleecing his followers while saying those who don't follow will be left to die horrible and painful deaths. So why donate any of his money?

Followers are gleefully parting with their money in several ways, which might actually do our faltering economy some good in the short-term. But what happens when 6pm comes and goes on the 21st and everyone is still alive? Everyone who spent their money will be left broke, disheartened and feeling betrayed. Who knows how many people might commit suicide because of this.

Chrome got another edge over competing browsers like Firefox this week with the introduction of Angry Birds for Chrome.

Rovio’s Chief Marketing Officer told press that Chrome got the honors because of features including “hardware acceleration, HTML 5, in-app payments” and the Chrome web store, where users can access the free game. Rovio CMO Peter Vesterbacka said:

“We’ve wanted to bring Angry Birds to the Web for a long time… The reason we’ve been so angry is we haven’t been able to do it until now. We think Chrome is great environment for Angry Birds.”

Angry Birds became available to Chrome users yesterday in the Chrome Web Store. The app is currently free, although that may eventually change. It’s also ad-free, unlike some mobile versions of the app. It will be interesting to see if this significantly affects the number of people actively using Chrome or helps the uptrending browser grab more market share from Mozilla.

John Demjanjuk guilty of Nazi death camp murders.A German court has found John Demjanjuk guilty of helping to murder more than 28,000 Jews at a Nazi death camp in World War II.

He was sentenced to five years in prison, one year less than prosecutors had asked for, but has been released pending a possible appeal.

Prosecutors said the Ukraine-born Demjanjuk, 91, was a guard at Sobibor camp in Nazi-occupied Poland in 1943.

He denied serving as a guard, saying he was a prisoner of war and a victim too.

Lawyers for Demjanjuk have said they will appeal against the conviction.

"The court is convinced that the defendant... served as a guard at Sobibor from 27 March 1943 to mid-September 1943," presiding Judge Ralph Alt said.

"As guard he took part in the murder of at least 28,000 people," he said.

An estimated 250,000 people died in the gas chambers at Sobibor. Demjanjuk was convicted of being an accessory to the murder of the 28,060 people who were killed there while he was a guard.

Legal precedent

It is not clear whether Demjanjuk, whose family says he is very ill, will get credit for time already served.

He has been in custody since being extradited from the US in 2009.

Libya's state TV has shown footage of Col Muammar Gaddafi meeting tribal leaders in Tripoli - his first public appearance in nearly two weeks.

Libyan officials said the video was shot in the capital on Wednesday. This has not been independently verified.

Col Gaddafi has not been seen since 30 April - when a Nato strike killed his youngest son and three grandchildren.

Earlier, Libyan rebels said they had seized Misrata airport in the west, driving back pro-Gaddafi troops.

Government forces have been pounding the western city, which remains largely under rebel control, for weeks.

Meanwhile, fresh explosions were reported in Tripoli on Wednesday.

Nato said earlier that its planes had carried out 6,000 missions over Libya since it assumed command of military operations there at the end of March.

The air strikes have helped secure rebels in their strongholds in eastern Libya, but observers say it remains unclear to what extent they have loosened Col Gaddafi's grip on the west of the country.

Rebels in the port city of Misrata have been besieged by pro-Gaddafi forces for several weeks

'Victorious'

In the footage, Col Gaddafi was dressed in his trademark brown robes, dark sunglasses and black hat. He appeared to be in good health.

"We tell the world, 'those are the representatives of the Libyan tribes,'" Col Gaddafi said, pointing to his visitors.

A man then was seen telling him: "You will be victorious."

On Wednesday, eyewitnesses said Misrata airport fell after hours of fighting between rebels and pro-Gaddafi forces.

The bodies of pro-government forces could be seen lying in the street as the rebels celebrated their victory, correspondents said. A dozen rebels were said to have been wounded in the fighting.

Col Ahmed Bani, a spokesmen for the rebel leadership in the eastern rebel stronghold of Benghazi, told the BBC that as well as taking the airport, "revolutionary forces" now controlled Misrata.

As well as burning government tanks, the rebels had captured other weaponry from the regime troops, he said.

Libya's third-largest city, Misrata is the only significant western rebel holdout and is strategically important because of its deep-sea port, which has become a lifeline for supplying civilians and for evacuating wounded people fleeing the fighting.

Though the rebels are said to be better organised than those in eastern Libya and have, for example, set up a network of makeshift arms factories, their campaign is still widely seen as an improvised affair.

The world's most popular cranky avians are about to land in your Web browser.

On the second day of Google's I/O developers conference in San Francisco, Google and Rovio Mobile announced that wildly popular smartphone and tablet game Angry Birds will be available on the Web via Google's Chrome browser starting Wednesday.

"We've wanted to bring Angry Birds to the Web for a long time," said Peter Vesterbacka, Rovio's chief marketing officer. "The reason we've been so angry is we haven't been able to do it until now. We think Chrome is great environment for Angry Birds."

Vesterbacka said Angry Birds chose Chrome as its first Web partner because Google's browser has the right combination of modern browser features, including hardware acceleration, HTML 5, in-app payments and a Web store through which the game can be downloaded.

Angry Birds went live in the Chrome Web store Wednesday, with special levels only available in the Chrome version of the game. The current beta version of the game is free, without the ads found in its Android mobile version. That may change as the app develops.

The game takes advantage of both the computer's central processing unit as well as its graphics processor to allow for the graphics-intensive interface that Angry Birds features. The game also incorporates Chrome's ability to store data locally on a computer, so Angry Birds can be played when the computer is not connected to the Internet.

"I've been working on improving the Web for a long time, and this is culmination point," Sundar Pichai, Google's senior vice president of Chrome in a keynote address, said jokingly. "My kids will finally think I'm doing something useful. It shows the pace at which the platform is evolving."

Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) also announced several milestones for Chrome on Wednesday.

Usage of the browser has soared over the past year, reaching 160 million users. That's more than double the 70 million people who were using the browser at the same time last year.

To entice consumers and developers to use Chrome, Google has kept the browser extremely up-to-date at the cutting edge of evolving Web technology. It launches a new version of the browser every six weeks.

Recent new features include speech-to-text capabilities, advanced hardware acceleration and the ability for developers to inexpensively accept in-app payments. Unlike most mobile app stores, which tax developers at about 30% of their sales -- including Google's own Android Market -- Google charges developers just 5% for sales made through the Chrome store.

New 'Chromebooks'

The company also announced two new "Chromebook" netbooks for Chrome OS, the company's Chrome-based operating system.

Chrome OS is a Web-based operating system that relies heavily on Web applications like Google Docs instead of installed software like Microsoft Word.

For consumers, Samsung will offer a 12.1 inch display Chrome book for $429, or $499 with 3G capabilities. The Acer ChromeBook has an 11.6 inch display and will sell for $349. Both include Intel (INTC, Fortune 500) Atom-based chips.

The new netbooks will be available for U.S. and European consumers to order on Amazon (AMZN, Fortune 500) and Best Buy (BBY, Fortune 500) on June 15.

For businesses, Google is starting a new program that allows companies to deploy Chromebooks to their workforce for $28 per user per month. IT administrators can manage each Chromebook via a Web console that comes as part of Google's service package. The service package also includes full support from Google and free replacements if the Chromebooks break down.

Pichai said he thinks Chrome OS will be attractive to about 75% of businesses that are currently using Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500) systems.

Google will offer the same program for governments and schools for $20 per user per month.

One plan aimed to target a US rail route, the reports said, although no imminent threat was detected.

Officials are examining computers, DVDs and documents seized from the Abbottabad home where they believe Bin Laden hid for up to six years.

President Obama is due to meet some of the troops involved in the operation.

He will hold private meetings on Friday at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, with at least some of the Navy Seals who took part in the raid.

On Thursday, the president visited the site of the attack of 11 September 2001 in New York, laying a wreath in memory of the nearly 3,000 victims who died at Ground Zero, and speaking to relatives at the site.

He told victims' families that justice had now been done, but that America "would never forget".

Derail plan

Bin Laden, the al-Qaeda leader who had been top of the US most wanted list since the attacks on New York and Washington in 2001, was killed by US special forces in northern Pakistan on Monday.

His body was then buried at sea from a US aircraft carrier.

Information about the apparent plans unearthed in Pakistan was contained in a joint FBI and Homeland Security bulletin, the Associated Press said.

The bulletin, circulated to law enforcement officials, said the idea to tamper with an unspecified US railway track was found in handwritten notes taken from Bin Laden's compound.

According to the bulletin al-Qaeda operatives planned to derail a train so that it would plunge into a valley, or from a bridge, AP reported.

"While it is clear that there was some level of planning for this type of operation in February 2010, we have no recent information to indicate an active ongoing plot to target transportation and no information on possible locations or specific targets," the warning read.

One intelligence official said the notes revealed the ambition to hit the US with large-scale attacks in major cities and on key dates such as anniversaries and holidays.

'Continued to plot'

One unnamed US official told the New York Times the documents revealed that Bin Laden was not merely a figurehead for al-Qaeda sympathisers worldwide.

A senior Pakistani military official said one of Bin Laden's wives told investigators she had been living in the compound for five years, along with her husband.

New reports of the raid appear to contradict earlier information about the raid.

White House counter-terrorism adviser John Brennan had originally suggested that Bin Laden was among those who was armed within the compound.

Early accounts of Sunday night's raid had suggested a lengthy exchange of fire throughout the 40-minute operation.

But US officials now say that only one person fired on the US special forces.

He is believed to have been Bin Laden's courier, Abu Ahmed al-Kuwaiti, who was killed at the start of the raid.

Critics have raised concerns about the legality of the operation after the US revised its account to acknowledge Bin Laden was unarmed when shot dead.

However, the US has maintained that Bin Laden was a lawful military target whose killing was "an act of national self-defence".

The US raid against Osama Bin Laden was launched after months of CIA surveillance from a safe house in Abbottabad, the Washington Post reported on Friday.

Citing unnamed officials, the newspaper said the CIA's operation used satellite imagery and attempted to record voices inside the compound, but was stood down before the military operation was eventually launched.

Virginia Beach, Virginia (CNN) -- The commando team that killed Osama bin Laden has already returned to American soil, a senior U.S. official said Wednesday. But in the town where they are widely believed to be based, you would never know it -- which is clearly by design.

While most soldiers returning from a war zone see an outpouring of welcome upon their return, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, it is quiet this week -- even though it is home to a storied team of Navy SEALs.

Obama to met SEAL team

The highly trained operatives of the unit often called SEAL Team Six, widely reported to have been the ones to kill bin Laden, keep a low profile -- with the help of the community.

That means city officials are planning no public commendations for the men based here, no matter how proud they are of the outcome of this week's overseas mission.

Virginia Beach Councilman Bill DeSteph is a former Naval intelligence officer, but he was mum when asked whether the American commandos who went to Pakistan are based here.

"No matter where these individuals are from," he said, "there's no city that will be able to confirm or deny, or throw a ticker-tape parade, or anything else."

SEAL Team Six is widely reported to operate out of Naval Air Station, Oceana, near Virginia Beach. The unit is covered with such a degree of secrecy that the military doesn't even acknowledge that it's here. And that code goes beyond operational security at the base.

Mayor Will Sessoms said, "you just want to reach out to them in some way, somehow, and say thank you." But the city, he told CNN affiliate WTKR, is honoring the servicemen's wishes. "They don't like the recognition, don't expect it, and it's a matter of keeping their families safe."

On the streets of Virginia Beach, tourists might have wondered whether any young man walking by just might be the person who shot Osama bin Laden.

John McGuire, a SEAL for 10 years, says SEALs are not necessarily easy to spot, and do not have a stereotypical look.

"We're tall, short, large, not-so-large -- try to blend in and be Americans," he said.

Unlike most military personnel, SEAL team members do not necessarily maintain a telltale military-style haircut, since their missions sometimes require them to be inconspicuous.

At popular Virginia Beach eateries like Shuckers and Mary's diner, some patrons said they have a pretty good sense of who's who -- but only thanks to background knowledge that only a local would know.

"Maybe your next-door neighbor, you have an inkling of what he is," said Maryellen Baldwin, at the Navy League of Hampton Roads. "But we don't talk about them," she said.

At a popular nightclub, the manager said that if an altercation broke out, a SEAL would likely leave the scene quickly in order to avoid jeopardizing the anonymity that his job relies on. The club manager asked not to be identified so as not to alienate any military patrons by speaking publicly.

Even the spouses or girlfriends of SEAL team members are unlikely to know much about their work, according to Baldwin.

"That is part of the code, the code of silence," she said.

But even without knowing how to thank the people who killed Osama bin Laden, locals here express appreciation, and pride, over their work.

"We have the la creme de la creme in this area," said Leila Batman, the general manager at Mary's Restaurant.

"And thank God we have 'em."

Consumer prices rose more than expected in the Philippines, bringing inflation to its highest level in a year.

The consumer price index rose by 4.5% in April from a year earlier, said the National Statistics Office. It was the highest gain since April 2010.

Many analysts predict the central bank will now raise interest rates later on Thursday.

Central banks in Asia have been trying to rein in rising prices without hurting economic growth.

The annual inflation in the Philippines in March was 4.3%.

"Inflation resumed its acceleration in April," said Sherman Chan from HSBC.

"This is hardly a surprise, given the strong inflationary pressures coming from food and oil recently."

The central bank is meeting later to review its policy.

"The report today clearly suggests that inflationary pressures remain, and strengthens the case for an expected 25 basis points hike by BSP [central bank Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas]," said Vincent Tsui from Standard Chartered Bank in Hong Kong.

While other Asian countries have raised interest rates in succession to try and control inflation as the global economy emerged from the financial crisis, the Philippines has only done so once, in March this year.

By contrast, Thailand increased the cost of borrowing this month for the sixth time since July 2010.

And India has raised rates nine times in 15 months.

Mexico's central bank bought more than 90 tonnes of gold between January and March, according to figures from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The World Gold Council has said it expects central banks in emerging markets to be the biggest buyers of gold, with its price near record highs.

Banks are seeking to diversify their reserves out of US dollars.

Mexico now owns 100.15 tonnes of gold, data on the IMF website showed. At the end of January it held 6.84 tonnes.

Mexico's purchase is equivalent to about 3.5% of annual mined output.

The country now owns $4.93bn (£2.98bn) worth of gold, which hit a record price of $1,575.79 an ounce on Monday.

It takes Mexico to 33rd place on the list of the world's top gold holders.

"Mexico seems to be following the trend established by several other central banks recently and is moving toward restoring a prior balance between gold and currency reserves," said George Milling-Stanley from the World Gold Council.

India recently bought 200 tonnes of gold from the IMF.

The latest IMF figures also show that Russia bought 18.8 tonnes and Thailand 9.3 tonnes, the World Gold Council said.

The US is the largest official holder of gold, with 8,133 tonnes.

China is the sixth largest holder, with 1,054.1 tonnes.

Gold is seen as a haven, attracting investors in times of uncertainty.

The agreement was ratified despite protests from the main opposition party

South Korea and the EU first began discussions on a free trade agreement in 2007, the same year a deal was signed between South Korea and the US.

However, the US-South Korea deal has been delayed because of opposition in both countries.

In America, the beef and car industries are holding up discussions, where as in South Korea it is the farmers that are against the deal.

US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton said during a recent visit to Seoul that Washington was hoping to get the agreement ratified this year.

Both the EU and US are hoping to be the first to get access to the market in Asia's fourth-largest economy.

The EU is currently South Korea's fourth-largest trading partner, while the US is their fifth-largest.

Sony has blamed the online vigilante group Anonymous for indirectly allowing the security breach that allowed a hacker to gain access to the personal data of more than 100m online gamers.

In a letter to the US Congress, Sony said the breach came at the same time as it was fighting a denial-of-service attack from Anonymous.

Denial-of-service attacks take servers down by overwhelming them with traffic.

The online vigilante group has denied being involved in the data theft.

Sony said that it had been the target of attacks from Anonymous because it had taken action against a hacker in a federal court in San Francisco.

'We are legion'

It added that the attack that stole the data had been launched separately while it was distracted by the denial-of-service attack, and that it was not sure whether the organisers of the two attacks were working together.

"Whether those who participated in the denial of service attacks were conspirators or whether they were simply duped into providing cover for a very clever thief, we may never know," Sony's letter said.

Sony said that it had discovered on Sunday a file planted on one of its servers named Anonymous and featuring the line "We are legion", which is a phrase used by the group.

In the letter to members of the House Commerce Committee, Kazuo Hirai, chairman of Sony Computer Entertainment America, defended the way that his company had dealt with the breach.

Sony discovered a breach in its Playstation video game network on 20 April but did not report it to US authorities for two days and only informed consumers on 26 April.

"Throughout the process, Sony Network Entertainment America was very concerned that announcing partial or tentative information to consumers could cause confusion and lead them to take unnecessary actions if the information was not fully corroborated by forensic evidence," the letter said.

US officials say Osama Bin Laden's body was treated with respect and buried at sea, but some Muslims argue there was no good reason for not burying it on land.

Islamic tradition requires the dead to be buried as soon as possible, unless an autopsy is required.

The US military took this requirement very seriously, burying the body within hours.

"Traditional procedures for Islamic burial were followed," an official said.

Religious rites were carried out on the deck of a US aircraft carrier, the USS Carl Vinson. The body, shrouded in a white sheet and placed in a weighted bag, was then placed on a flat board, tipped up, and eased into the Arabian Sea.

This occurred at 0600GMT, approximately 12 hours after the firefight during which Osama Bin Laden was shot in the head.

After this first shot, reports ABC News' The Blotter, he was shot again, to make sure that he was dead.

‬The body was then flown to Afghanistan and Bin Laden's identity was confirmed. Officials say a DNA sample was taken that matched that of several other family members. Some sources say facial recognition technology was also used.

From Afghanistan, the body was, it appears, flown to the USS Carl Vinson.

"A military officer read prepared religious remarks, which were translated into Arabic by a native speaker," a US defence official said.

President Obama and his top intelligence and military officials were able to monitor in a "real-time basis" the progress of the operation on Osama bin Laden's compound, the president's top counterterrorism adviser said.

"It was probably one of the most anxiety filled periods of time I think in the lives of the people who were assembled here yesterday. The minutes passed like days and the president was very concerned about the security of our personnel," he said. "That is what was on his mind throughout and we wanted to make sure that we would get through this and accomplish the mission. But it was clearly very tense. A lot of people holding their breath."

Brennan said "there was a tremendous sigh of relief" when they believed bin Laden was in fact at the compound.

[Updated 2:30 p.m. ET] A woman shielded Osama bin Laden from gunfire during the assault by U.S. forces, President Barack Obama's top counterterrorism adviser said Monday.

"There was a female who was in fact in the line of fire that reportedly was used as a shield to shield bin Laden from the incoming fire," said John Brennan, Obama's adviser on homeland security and counterterrorism.

Brennan said it was his understanding that bin Laden picked up a weapon and was killed in the firefight with the U.S. forces carrying out the assault.

"He was engaged in a firefight," Brennan said of bin Laden. "Whether or not he got off any rounds, I don't know."

[Updated 2:21 p.m. ET] The decision by President Barack Obama to launch the assault that killed Osama bin Laden was one of the "gutsiest" calls by any president in recent memory, Obama's top counterterrorism adviser said Monday.

John Brennan, assistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism, said that despite intelligence indicating that bin Laden was in the compound in Pakistan, there was no certainty the al Qaeda leader was actually there.

Obama "made what I believe was one of the ... gutsiest calls of any president in recent memory," Brennan said.

[Updated 2:08 p.m. ET] President Barack Obama's top counterterrorism adviser said Monday that it was "inconceivable" that Osama bin Laden did not have some kind of support system in Pakistan that allowed him to live in hiding there.

John Brennan, the president's assistant on homeland security and counterterrorism, refused to speculate on what kind of support bin Laden might have received, or whether the Pakistani government or official Pakistani institutions had any role.

[Updated 1:39 p.m. ET] Officials compared DNA of the person killed at the Abbottobad compound with bin Laden "family DNA" to determine that the 9/11 mastermind had in fact been killed, a senior administration official said.

Four others in the compound also were killed. One of them was bin Laden's adult son, and another was a woman being used as a shield by a male combatant, officials said.

[Updated 12:39 p.m. ET] The compound where Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces is located a bit more than 1,000 yards from a Pakistan Military Academy, raising some questions about how much information the Pakistan military may have had about his whereabouts.

U.S. Sen. Carl Levin, Senate Armed Services Committee chairman, said during a press conference that the Pakistani army has "a lot of explaining to do."

[Updated 12:27 p.m. ET] Senior defense officials said that for a majority of the 40 minute operation at the Abbottobad compound, special forces were involved in a firefight - clearing their way through two other floors before they reached Osama bin Laden.

Bin Laden was not killed until the last five to ten minutes of the firefight, officials said.

Bin Laden and his family lived on the 2nd and 3rd floors of the 3-story building, and those floors were cleared last, the official said. The official says one of bin Laden’s own wives identified his body to U.S. forces, after the team made visual identification themselves.

U.S. forces also recovered what a senior Intelligence official is calling “quite a bit of material.”

“There’s a robust collection of materials we need to sift through, and we hope to find valuable intelligence that will lead us to other players in al Qaeda," a senior intelligence official said.

The official added a Task Force has been set up “because of the sheer volume of material collected. That material is currently being exploited and analyzed.”

[Updated 12:25 p.m. ET] A soldier in a special forces unit based in Georgia told CNN on Monday that while the news of Osama bin Laden’s death is cause for celebration, elite military units have sprang into high alert.

“A lot of guys got their security clearances elevated due to what happened last night,” said Lamont, who didn’t give his last name because of what he said were security reasons. “I lot of people got called back” overseas, he said, adding that his unit already was scheduled for deployment as early as two weeks ago.

[Updated 12:22 p.m. ET] Osama bin Laden's body was buried at sea according to Islamic law because no country was willing or able to take his body for burial on land, senior Defense officials said.

"When there is no land alternative, Islamic law dictates that the body be buried within 24 hours, and that was the basis," one official said. "

A second senior Defense official said there was no country willing or able to accept the body for burial, and U.S. forces "took pains to observe Muslim law."

"Today's religious rites were conducted on the deck of the USS Carl Vinson in the Arabian sea. The ceremony started at 1:10am and finished at 2:10am ET," the second official said. "Procedures for Islamic body were followed. The body was washed and placed in a white sheet. A military official read prepared remarks, which were then translated into Arabic by a native speaker. The body of Osama bin Laden was placed on a flat board, which was then tipped up, and allowed to slide into the sea."

[Updated 12:16 p.m. ET] President Barack Obama said Monday that he thinks "we can all agree this is a good day for America."

"Our country kept its commitment to see that justice is done," he said. The world, he said, is a better place because of the death of Osama bin Laden.

The successful operation to kill bin Laden reminds Americans that there is "nothing we can't do" when we work together, he said. That spirit, he said, is seen in the patriotic crowds that have gathered across the country.

"We're reminded that we're fortunate to have Americans who have dedicated their lives to protecting ours," he said. "As commander-in-chief, I could not be prouder."

Al-Qaeda remaining leaders Ayman al-Zawahiri, including Osama Bin Laden, while some new names have emerged.

After 11 September 2001, the US issued a list of suspected al-Qaeda leaders. Many have now been captured or killed, including Osama Bin Laden, while some new names have emerged.

Ayman al-Zawahiri, an eye surgeon who helped found the Egyptian Islamic Jihad militant group, is expected to replace Osama Bin Laden as the leader of al-Qaeda.

He was already the group's chief ideologue and was believed by some experts to have been the "operational brains" behind the 11 September 2001 attacks in the US.

Zawahiri was number two - behind only Bin Laden - in the 22 "most wanted terrorists" list announced by the US government in 2001 and continues to have a $25m bounty on his head.

Zawahiri was reportedly last seen in the eastern Afghan town of Khost in October 2001, and went into hiding after a US-led coalition overthrew the Taliban.

He was thought to be hiding in the mountainous regions along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border with the help of sympathetic local tribes. However, the killing of Bin Laden on 1 May 2011 in Abbottabad, north of the Pakistani capital Islamabad, suggests this may not be the case. His wife and children were reportedly killed in a US air strike in late 2001.

Zawahiri was for a time al-Qaeda's most prominent spokesman, appearing in 40 videos and audiotapes since 2003 - most recently in April 2011 - as the group tried to radicalise and recruit Muslims worldwide.

He has also been indicted in the US for his role in the 1998 US embassy bombings in Africa, and was sentenced to death in Egypt in absentia for his activities with Islamic Jihad during the 1990s.

Abu Yahya al-Libi

Abu Yahya al-Libi, also known as Hasan Qayid and Yunis al-Sahrawi, is thought to have been a member of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG) before he allied himself to Osama Bin Laden.

He has since emerged as al-Qaeda's leading theologian, and most visible face on video, surpassing Ayman al-Zawahri in recent years.

Libi is believed to have spent five years as a religious student in Mauritania in the 1990s.

He claims he was captured by Pakistani forces in 2002 and then sent to the US military airbase at Bagram in Afghanistan, from where he escaped in July 2005 along with three other al-Qaeda members.

Al-Qaeda has named Libi as a field commander in Afghanistan, though he has styled himself in his many videos as a theological scholar, and spoken on a variety of global issues of importance to the group.

Khalid al-Habib

Khalid al-Habib, thought to be either Egyptian or Moroccan, was identified in a November 2005 video as al-Qaeda's field commander in south-east Afghanistan, while Abd al-Hadi al-Iraqi was named as its commander in the south-west.

Habib seems to have assumed overall command after the latter's capture in 2006.

He was described as al-Qaeda's "military commander" in July 2008.

US military officials say he oversees al-Qaeda's "internal" operations in Afghanistan and northern Pakistan.

Habib may be operating under an assumed identity, according to some analysts. One of his noms de guerre is believed to be Khalid al-Harbi.

Adnan el Shukrijumah

In August 2010, the FBI said Adnan Gulshair el Shukrijumah had taken over as chief of al-Qaeda's "external operations council". Having lived for more than 15 years in the US, it is the first time a leader intimately familiar with American society has been placed in charge of planning attacks for the group outside Afghanistan.

Such a position - once held by the alleged mastermind of 9/11, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed - necessitates regular contact with al-Qaeda's senior leadership and military commanders, and makes him likely to be killed or captured.

Born in Saudi Arabia, Shukrijumah moved to the US when his father, a Muslim cleric, took up a post at a mosque in Brooklyn. They later moved to Florida.

In the late 1990s, he became convinced that he had to participate in jihad in place like Chechnya, and left for training camps in Afghanistan.

Shukrijumah has been named in a US federal indictment as a conspirator in the case against three men accused of plotting suicide bomb attacks on New York's subway system in 2009. He is also suspected of having played a role in plotting al-Qaeda attacks in Panama, Norway and the UK.

Atiyah Abd al-Rahman

A Libyan, Atiyah Abd al-Rahman joined Osama Bin Laden in Afghanistan as a teenager in the 1980s.

Since then, he has gained considerable stature in al-Qaeda as an explosives expert and Islamic scholar.

He retreated with Bin Laden to the mountainous Afghanistan-Pakistan border region in late 2001, and has since become a link to other Islamist militant groups in the Middle East and North Africa.

In June 2006 the US military recovered a letter he wrote to the late Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the Jordanian who ran al-Qaeda in Iraq, chastising him for alienating rival insurgent groups and attacking Shia Muslims. It warned Zarqawi that he could be replaced if he did not change his ways.

He is said to have successfully brokered a formal alliance with the Algerian Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), which changed its name to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

Saif al-Adel

An Egyptian in his late 30s, Saif al-Adel is the nom de guerre of a former Egyptian army colonel, Muhamad Ibrahim Makkawi. He travelled to Afghanistan in the 1980s to fight Soviet forces with the mujahideen.

Adel was once Osama Bin Laden's security chief, and assumed many of military commander Mohammed Atef's duties after his death in a US air strike in November 2001.

He is suspected of involvement in the 1998 US embassy bombings in East Africa, training the Somali fighters who killed 18 US servicemen in Mogadishu in 1993, and instructing some of the 11 September 2001 hijackers.

In 1987, Egypt accused Adel of trying to establish a military wing of the militant Islamic group al-Jihad, and of trying to overthrow the government.

Following the invasion of Afghanistan, Adel is believed to have fled to Iran with Suleiman Abu Ghaith and Saad Bin Laden, a son of the late al-Qaeda leader. They were allegedly then held under house arrest by the Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Iran has never acknowledged their presence.

Several letters and internet statements bearing Adel's name or aliases have been released since 2002, leading analysts to believe he is still in contact with al-Qaeda's leaders in the region.

Recent reports say Adel may have been released and made his way to northern Pakistan, along with Saad Bin Laden.

Mustafa Hamid

Mustafa Hamid, the father-in-law of Saif al-Adel, served as instructor in tactics at an al-Qaeda camp near Jalalabad and is the link between the group and Iran's government, according to the US.

After the fall of the Taliban, he is said to have negotiated the safe relocation of several senior al-Qaeda members and their families to Iran. In mid-2003, Hamid was arrested by the Iranian authorities.

Saad Bin Laden

Saad Bin Laden, one of Osama Bin Laden's sons, has been involved in al-Qaeda activities. In late 2001, he helped his relatives flee to Iran.

He made key decisions for al-Qaeda and was part of a small group of al-Qaeda members involved in managing the organisation from Iran, according to US officials. He was arrested by Iranian authorities in early 2003, but recent reports say he may have been released and made his way to northern Pakistan.

US officials said an "adult son" of Osama Bin Laden's was killed alongside him in the raid in Abbottabad in May 2011. It is not known if it was Saad.

Hamza al-Jawfi

Hamza al-Jawfi, a Gulf Arab, is believed by some to have become al-Qaeda's external operations chief after the death of Abu Ubaida al-Masri from hepatitis C in December 2007. However, the FBI has said this year that Adnan el Shukrijumah had assumed this role.

Matiur Rehman

Matiur Rehman is a Pakistani militant who has been identified as al-Qaeda's planning chief. He is said to have been an architect of the foiled "liquid bomb" plot to explode passenger aircraft over the Atlantic in 2006.

Abu Khalil al-Madani

Little is known about Abu Khalil al-Madani, who was identified as a member of al-Qaeda's Shura council in a July 2008 video. His name suggests he is Saudi.

Midhat Mursi

An Egyptian chemist, Midhat Mursi al-Sayid Omar has allegedly overseen al-Qaeda's efforts to develop chemical and biological weapons.

Also known as Abu Khabab, he left Egypt to fight the Soviets in the 1980s. A fellow mujahideen says he was slow to join al-Qaeda because he disagreed with the group's central strategy and was not an ally of Ayman al-Zawahiri, but changed his mind in part because he needed the money.

Mursi was a trainer at al-Qaeda's Derunta camp in Afghanistan when it was set up in the late 1990s.

In addition to teaching courses on conventional explosives, he wrote manuals on how to make toxic weapons and conducted a variety of experiments as part of Project al-Zabadi, or "curdled milk".

The US believes he may be living in Pakistan, although other reports suggest he escaped to the Pankisi Gorge in the Caucasus region in 2001. US intelligence officials do not believe he occupies a senior leadership position.

Fahd Mohammed Ahmed al-Quso

Fahd al-Quso is wanted in connection with the 2000 bomb attack on the USS Cole in Aden, which resulted in the deaths of 17 US sailors.

In April 2003, he was being held by the Yemeni authorities in connection with the attack when he escaped. He was recaptured 11 months later, but was released from prison early in 2007 despite US protests.

It was thought that he was still in Yemen, but reports say he may have been killed by a US drone strike in September in North Waziristan, Pakistan.

Adam Gadahn

Adam Gadahn, a US citizen who grew up in California, has emerged as a high-profile propagandist for al-Qaeda, appearing in a string of videos.

After converting to Islam as a teenager, he moved in 1998 to Pakistan and married an Afghan refugee. Gadahn performed translations for al-Qaeda and become associated with al-Qaeda's captured field commander, Abu Zubaydah. He is also thought to have later trained at a militant camp in Afghanistan.

In 2004, the US justice department named him as one of seven al-Qaeda operatives planning imminent attacks on the US. Shortly afterwards, he appeared in a video on behalf of al-Qaeda, identifying himself as "Azzam the American".

In September 2006, he appeared in a video with Ayman al-Zawahiri and exhorted his fellow Americans to convert to Islam and support al-Qaeda.

The next month, Gadahn become the first US citizen to be charged with treason since World War II. The indictment said he had "knowingly adhered to an enemy of the United States... with intent to betray the United States". A $1m bounty was placed on his head.

Analysts say Gadahn is not part of al-Qaeda's senior leadership, and does not hold any operational or ideological significance.

Nasser Abdul Karim al-Wuhayshi

Wuhayshi, a former aide to Osama Bin Laden, is the leader of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which was formed in 2009 in a merger between two offshoots of al-Qaeda in Saudi Arabia and Yemen.

US counter-terrorism officials have said it is the "most active operation franchise" of al-Qaeda beyond Pakistan and Afghanistan.

Wuhayshi, who is from the southern Yemeni governorate of al-Baida, spent time in religious institutions before travelling to Afghanistan in the late 1990s.

He fought at the battle of Tora Bora in December 2001, before escaping over the border into Iran, where he was eventually arrested. He was extradited to Yemen in 2003.

In February 2006, Wuhayshi and 22 other suspected al-Qaeda members managed to escape from a prison in Sanaa. Among them were also Jamal al-Badawi, the alleged mastermind of the USS Cole bombing, and Qasim al-Raymi, al-Qaeda's in the Arabian Peninsula's military commander.

After their escape from prison, Wuhayshi and Raymi are said to have overseen the formation of al-Qaeda in Yemen, which took in both new recruits and Arab fighters returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

The group claimed responsibility for two suicide bomb attacks that killed six Western tourists before being linked to the assault on the US embassy in Sanaa in 2008, in which 10 Yemeni guards and four civilians died.

Four months later, Wuhayshi announced in a video the merger of the al-Qaeda offshoots in Yemen and Saudi Arabia to form "al-Qaeda of Jihad Organisation in the Arabian Peninsula".

The group's first operation outside Yemen was carried out in Saudi Arabia in August 2009 against the kingdom's security chief, Prince Mohammed bin Nayef, though he survived.

It later said it was behind the attempt to blow up a US passenger jet as it flew into Detroit on 25 December 2009. A Nigerian man charged in relation with the incident said AQAP operatives had trained him.

Anwar al-Awlaki

A radical American Muslim cleric of Yemeni descent, Awlaki has been linked to a series of attacks and plots across the world - from 11 September 2001 to the shootings at Fort Hood in November 2009.

Since going on the run in Yemen in December 2007, Awlaki's overt endorsement of violence as a religious duty in his sermons and on the internet is thought to have inspired new recruits to Islamist militancy.

US officials say he is also a leader of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, an offshoot of the militant network in Saudi Arabia and Yemen, and helped recruit Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian accused of attempting to blow up an airliner as it flew into Detroit on 25 December 2009.

Following the failed attack, President Barack Obama took the extraordinary step of authorising the Central Intelligence Agency to kill him. Soon afterwards, Awlaki survived an air strike in southern Yemen.

Awlaki is currently thought to be hiding in the mountainous governorates of Shabwa and Marib, under the protection of the large and powerful Awalik tribe, to which he belongs. His family say he is not a terrorist.

Abou Mossab Abdelwadoud

A former university science student and infamous bomb-maker, Abdelwadoud is the leader of al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).

He became leader of the head of the Algerian Islamist militant organisation, the Salafist Group for Preaching and Combat (GSPC), in mid-2004, succeeding Nabil Sahraoui after he was killed in a major army operation.

After university in 1995, Abdelwadoud joined the Armed Islamist Group (GIA), a precursor to the GSPC which shared its aim of establishing an Islamic state in Algeria. He is said to have become a member of the GSPC in 1998.

Abdelwadoud, whose real name is Abdelmalek Droukdel, was one of the signatories to a statement in 2003 announcing an alliance with al-Qaeda.

In September 2006, the GSPC said it had joined forces with al-Qaeda, and in January 2007 it announced it had changed its name to "al-Qaeda in the Land of the Islamic Maghreb" to reflect its allegiance. Abdelwadoud said he had consulted Ayman al-Zawahiri about the group's plans.

Three months later, 33 people were killed in bomb attacks on official buildings in Algiers. Abdelwadoud allegedly supervised the operation. That December, twin car bombs killed at least 37 people in the capital.

The ambitions of the group's leadership widened, and it subsequently carried out a number of attacks across North Africa. It also declared its intention to attack Western targets and send jihadis to Iraq. Westerners have also been kidnapped and held for ransom; some have been killed.

Bin Laden was killed in a ground operation outside Islamabad based on US intelligence, the first lead for which emerged last August.

Mr Obama said after "a firefight", US forces took possession of the body.

Bin Laden is believed to be the mastermind of the attacks on New York and Washington on 11 September 2001 and a number of others.

He was top of the US' "most wanted" list.

Mr Obama said it was "the most significant achievement to date in our nation's effort to defeat al-Qaeda".

The US has put its embassies around the world on alert, warning Americans of the possibility of al-Qaeda reprisal attacks for Bin Laden's killing.

How will al-Qaeda react? In the short term, the Obama administration is already bracing itself for possible revenge attacks. But for many the bigger question is whether, in the longer run, al-Qaeda can survive.

Since the start of the year, some experts have argued that the uprisings in the Arab world have rendered it irrelevant. They will see Bin Laden's death as confirming the trend. Perhaps.

But the root causes of radical Islam - the range of issues that enabled al-Qaeda to recruit disaffected young Muslims to its cause - remain, for the most part, unaddressed. The death of Bin Laden will strike at the morale of the global jihad, but is unlikely to end it.

Crowds gathered outside the White House in Washington DC, chanting "USA, USA" after the news emerged.

A US official quoted by Associated Press news agency said Bin Laden's body had been buried at sea, although this has not been confirmed.

Compound raided

Bin Laden had approved the 9/11 attacks in which nearly 3,000 people died.

He evaded the forces of the US and its allies for almost a decade, despite a $25m bounty on his head.

Mr Obama said he had been briefed last August on a possible lead to Bin Laden's whereabouts.

"It was far from certain, and it took many months to run this thread to ground," Mr Obama said.

"I met repeatedly with my national security team as we developed more information about the possibility that we had located Bin Laden hiding within a compound deep inside of Pakistan.

"And finally, last week, I determined that we had enough intelligence to take action, and authorised an operation to get Osama Bin Laden and bring him to justice," the president said.

Bin Laden was top of the US "most wanted" list

On Sunday, US forces said to be from the elite Navy Seal Team Six undertook the operation in Abbottabad, 100km (62 miles) north-east of Islamabad.

After a "firefight" Bin Laden was killed and his body taken by US forces, the president said.

Mr Obama said "no Americans were harmed".

US officials said Bin Laden was shot in the head after resisting.

US media reports said that the body was buried at sea to conform with Islamic practice of a burial within 24 hours and to prevent any grave becoming a shrine.

Giving more details of the raid, one senior US official said a small US team had conducted the attack in about 40 minutes.

Three other men were killed in the raid - one of Bin Laden's sons and two couriers - the official said, adding that one woman was also killed when she was used as "a shield" and two other women were injured.

One helicopter was lost due to "technical failure". The team destroyed it and left in its other aircraft.

One resident, Nasir Khan, told Reuters the helicopters had come under "intense firing" from the ground.

The size and complexity of the structure in Abbottabad had "shocked" US officials.

It had 4m-6m (12ft-18ft) walls, was eight times larger than other homes in the area and was valued at "a million dollars", though it had no telephone or internet connection.

The US official said that intelligence had been tracking a "trusted courier" of Bin Laden for many years. The courier's identity was discovered four years ago, his area of operation two years ago and then, last August, his residence in Abbottabad was found, triggering the start of the mission.

Another senior US official said that no intelligence had been shared with any country, including Pakistan, ahead of the raid.

"Only a very small group of people inside our own government knew of this operation in advance," the official said.

The Abbottabad residence is just a few hundred metres from the Pakistan Military Academy - the country's equivalent of West Point.

The BBC's Aleem Maqbool in Abbottabad says it will undoubtedly be a huge embarrassment to Pakistan that Bin Laden was found not only in the country but also on the doorstep of the military academy.

He says residents in the town were stunned the al-Qaeda leader was living in their midst.

The senior US official warned that the possibility of revenge attacks had now created "a heightened threat to the homeland and to US citizens and facilities abroad".

But the official added that "the loss of Bin Laden puts the group on a path of decline that will be difficult to reverse".

He said Bin Laden's probable successor, Ayman al-Zawahiri, was "far less charismatic and not as well respected within the organisation", according to reports from captured al-Qaeda operatives.

'Momentous achievement'

World leaders welcomed the news of Bin Laden's death.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai said Bin Laden had "paid for his actions".

Pakistani PM Yusuf Raza Gilani said the killing was a "great victory" but added that he "didn't know the details" of the US operation.

In Gaza, which is governed by militant group Hamas, Prime Minister Ismail Haniya condemned the killing of "a Muslim and Arabic warrior".

BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner says that, to many in the West, Bin Laden became the embodiment of global terrorism, but to others he was a hero, a devout Muslim who fought two world superpowers in the name of jihad.

The son of a wealthy Saudi construction family, Bin Laden grew up in a privileged world. But soon after the Soviets invaded Afghanistan he joined the mujahideen there and fought alongside them with his Arab followers, a group that later formed the nucleus for al-Qaeda.

After declaring war on America in 1998, Bin Laden is widely believed to have been behind the bombings of US embassies in East Africa, the attack on the USS Cole in Yemen in 2000 and the attacks on New York and Washington.

Less than 40 minutes later, Osama bin Laden was dead along with four others inside the complex, and the U.S. forces departed with the slain al Qaeda leader's body to fulfill a vow that originated shortly after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.

U.S. President Barack Obama announced the successful raid on Sunday night, and senior administration officials provided further details on the assault on the compound they believe was built five years ago about 100 kilometers, or 62 miles, north of the Pakistani capital of Islamabad for the specific purpose of hiding bin Laden.

The senior administration officials refused to provide information on the composition or numbers of the U.S. mission, but were able to describe to reporters the overall scenario of what happened.

After years of intelligence work and months of following a specific lead, they traced a courier linked to bin Laden to the compound in Abbottabad, described as an affluent residential area.

When first built, the compound was secluded and reachable by only a dirt road, the officials said. In recent years, more residences built up around it, but it remained by far the largest and most heavily secured property in the area, they said.

The mission ordered Friday by Obama encountered outer walls up to 18 feet tall topped with barbed wire, with two security gates and a series of internal walls that sectioned off different portions of the compound, the senior administration officials said. The main structure was a three-story building with few windows facing the outside of the compound, and a third-floor terrace had a seven-foot privacy wall, they said.

Months of intelligence work determined that the compound was custom-built to hide a high-value terrorism suspect, almost certainly bin Laden. The officials noted there was no telephone or Internet service at the dwelling, which was valued at more than $1 million, and its occupants burned their trash, rather than leave it out for collection like other area residents.

Calling the U.S. operation a surgical raid, officials said it was conducted by a small team and designed to minimize collateral damage. Upon landing, the team encountered resistance from bin Laden and three other men that resulted in a firefight.

In the end, all four of the combatants in the compound were dead, along with a woman whom one of the men used as a human shield, the officials said. Sources said bin Laden was shot in the head.

At some point, one of the assaulting helicopters crashed due to a mechanical failure, according to the officials. It was detonated as the U.S. team flew away to destroy it, they said.

Obama and the senior administration officials said no U.S. forces were harmed in the operation, which took place very early Monday morning, Pakistan time. They provided no other details of the raid itself, but a senior defense official said U.S. Navy SEALs were involved.

U.S. officials said they used facial imaging and other methods to identify the body as bin Laden.

One official said it was clear to the assault force that the body matched bin Laden's description, but they used "facial recognition work, amongst other things, to confirm the identity."

A senior national security official told CNN that they had multiple confirmations that the body was bin Laden, saying they had the "ability to run images of the body and the face."

Another U.S. official told CNN that bin Laden has already been buried at sea. The official said his body was handled in the Islamic tradition, but did not elaborate.

A senior administration official also said bin Laden's body would be "handled in accordance with Islamic practice and tradition. This is something that we take very seriously, and so therefore this is being handled in an appropriate manner."

According to the senior administration officials, intelligence work determined at the beginning of 2011 that bin Laden might be located at the compound in Pakistan. By mid-February, the intelligence was considered strong enough to begin considering action pledged by Obama when bin Laden's whereabouts had been determined.

Obama chaired five National Security Council meetings from mid-March until late April, with the last two on April 19 and April 28 -- last Thursday. The next day, on Friday, Obama gave the order for the mission, the officials said.

The key break involved one of the few couriers trusted by bin Laden, according to the officials. About two years ago, intelligence work identified where the courier and his brother lived and operated in Pakistan, and it took until August of last year to find the compound in Abbottabad raided Sunday, they said.

"When we saw the compound where the brothers lived, we were shocked by what we saw -- an extraordinarily unique compound," one senior administration official said. "The compound sits on a large plot of land in an area that was relatively secluded when it was built. It is roughly eight times larger than the other homes in the area."

Noting that the courier and his brother had no discernible source of wealth to live at such a property, intelligence analysts concluded the compound was "custom-built to hide someone of extraordinary significance," the official said, adding: "Everything was consistent with what experts thought Osama bin Laden's compound would look like."

Another senior administration official told reporters that Obama's administration did not share intelligence gathered beforehand with any other country -- including Pakistan -- for security reasons. The official said that only a small group of people inside the U.S government knew about this operation in advance.

However, a senior Pakistani intelligence official said members of Pakistan's intelligence service, the ISI, were on site in Abbottabad during the operation. There was no way to immediately resolve the apparent discrepancy.
